The Hagia Sophia (from the Greek “Ἁγία Σοφία”, meaning “holy wisdom”) is a former church, later a mosque, and currently a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Constructed in 537 on the orders of Emperor Justinian I after two former churches had been burnt down during riots, the Hagia Sophia was originally built as the seat of the Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople and also offered asylum to foreign outlaws. From the time of its completion until the construction of Seville Cathedral almost a thousand years later, it was the largest cathedral in the world. When Constantinople was taken by the Ottomans in 1453, the church was pillaged and desecrated and subsequently turned into a mosque. It became the first imperial mosque of Istanbul. It currently stands as a museum, and one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture - so richly decorated was the building that, on completion, Justinian supposedly said, “Solomon, I have outdone thee!”
