"Did you never think, even once, that I loved lipstick and rouge for more than their color alone?
I am a student of their lore, and it is arcane and hermetic beyond the dreams of alchemists. …
Cosmetics are an extension of the will.
Why do you think all men paint themselves when they go to fight?"

“We’re meant to believe we’re lucky to have someone, that we’re worthy only if chosen by someone else.
Like stunted trees, we plant roots and grow up on the water of these ideas, never daring to ask for more, never questioning.
I never wanted to buy into it. I told myself I was different, that my bark was impenetrable as armour.
Really, I never considered that every other girl might be convincing herself of the same thing.
I always thought I was an unusual girl, but those ideas have shaped me.
I’ve grown up as twisted and gnarled and fragile as the rest.
You see, we’re all fed by the same poisoned stream.”

"The issue is that if society classes you as female, you have to abandon all femininity to be andro enough. In a society where “male” is the default, there is a lot more room for masculinity displayed by androgynous people classed as “male” than for androgynous people classed as “female” and this has been my struggle. I enjoy wearing makeup, but can’t really get away with it if I wish to aspire to androgyny. As someone who is genderqueer, I have about as much desire to be overtly masculine as I do to be overtly feminine, but my simple jeans and t-shirts aren’t enough if I want to be truly androgynous. In order to be that which is genderless, I have to be more masculine. Doesn’t that sound a bit hypocritical?"
